Redlegs Stunned by Bats in Game 1

08/29/2011

The Camden Redlegs entered the playoffs on fire having won their last 5 games. They were looking to carry that momentum into their round 1 playoff series against the Miami Valley Bats.

The Redlegs struck first in the 2nd inning when Brandon Howard was hit by a pitch and was later driven in by Justin McCurdy on a fielder's choice to the second baseman. The top of the third saw the Bats string together 6 straight hits against Redlegs starter Kevin Campbell to give the Bats a 3-1 lead.

Jake Robinson tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom half of the 3rd with a 2-run single that brought in Kyle Slone, who had reached on an error, and Steve Benthal who had doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd.

This was all the scoring the Redlegs could muster against Bats starter Josh Cornwell who pitched the complete game and allowed only 3 hits.

The Bats scored what turned out to be the winning run in the 4th when Ric Atherley drew a walk and came around to score on a fielder's choice by Tyler Lukas. The Redlegs didn't threaten the rest of the game having only two baserunners in the final 4 frames on a walk and an error. The Bats held on for a 4-3 Game 1 victory.
