Bats Back up Campbell For 1st Win

The Redlegs met up with the Miami Valley Thunder on Sunday for a 9 inning affair at Action Sports Complex in Dayton. Kevin Campbell made his 2nd consecutive start for the Redlegs and went 7 strong innings giving up only 4 runs, 3 earned, and striking out 4 en route to his first victory of the season. Brad Clark pitched the final 2 frames and allowed only 2 hits and 1 unearned run.

The Redlegs took an early lead as they put one run on the board in the bottom of the 1st. Matt Redman led off with a walk, stole second, and was driven in on a single by Brandon Howard. But the Thunder took the lead in the 3rd as they pushed 2 runs across to take a 2-1 advantage. The lead was short lived though, as in the bottom of the 4th inning the Redlegs sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs. Matt Mattice hit a solo homerun and 2 run single, Steve Benthal doubled twice and drove in 2 and Brad Clark had a 2 RBI single to highlight the inning. The Redlegs Bats went silent as they were unable to score the rest of the game, but the 11 runs were enough to hold off the Thunder who scored 2 more in the 7th and 1 more in the 9th to pull it within 6.

Jacob Robinson saw his 1st action of the season after being cleared by doctors on Wednesday. He went 1 for 1 and seems ready to contribute to the 2012 season. Matt Redman drew 3 more walks in the game, pushing his early total to 6 and he currently sports a .700 on base percentage. In the 7th inning Matt Mattice was able to hook up with catcher Steve Benthal on a nice throw from right field to cut a runner down at home and limit the damage in the frame to only 2 runs. Next week the Redlegs will take on the Springfield Indians at Howell Field at 12:00pm.
