Redlegs Can't Cash In; Lose Nightcap

05/21/2012

After the back and forth game 1 of the double header, game 2 was just the opposite. The Royals took the lead in the top of the 1st inning and would not trail a single time in the ball game.

After falling behind 2-0, the Redlegs were able to tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning. After a fly out to begin the inning, Steve Benthal and Matt Mattice singled consecutively and moved to 2nd and 3rd on stolen bases. Jack Millard then drove in a run with a single and Bobby Dempsey brought in the 2nd with a sacrifice fly to right field. The Royals took the lead right back in the top half of the 3rd, putting 3 more runs on the board to bring the score to 5-2. The final score the Redlegs managed to push across came in the bottom of the 3rd when Kyle Slone doubled and moved to 3rd on a single from Matt Redman. Redman stole 2nd and Slone took home with some heads up base running.

Brandon Howard pitched the final 5 innings for the Redlegs and surrendered only 1 earned run, but some defensive miscues and runners left stranded on base didn’t offer much assistance for Howard’s effort. The Redlegs will try to even up the record at 3-3 when they take on the Ohio Mariners on Sunday 5/27 at 1:00pm at Athletes in Action Sports Complex in Xenia.
