Redlegs Route Thunder in Offensive Explosion

07/09/2012

With the Redlegs and Thunder entering Sunday with very similar records, one would have expected two tight games in the doubleheader at Preble Shawnee High School. That assumption turned out to be correct for one game, but the Redlegs offense really opened up in game 1 as they put 29 runs on the board. The Redleg offense has stumbled a bit out of the gate, so it was nice to see everyone hitting and contributing at the same time. In fact, 8 of the 10 batters in the starting lineup had multiple hits in the game.

Kevin Campbell started on the mound, and while he didn’t have his best stuff, he was able to get a complete game victory thanks to the rare offensive support that he received. The Thunder took an early lead in the top of the 1st inning when Ryan Callison slugged his 7th homerun of the season to knock in 3 runs. But the Redlegs responded by sending 12 men to the plate which produced 8 runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to hits by Jack Millard, Steve Benthal, Jacob Robinson, and John Long and walks to 5 other batters. After the Thunder went 1-2-3 in the top of the 2nd, the Redlegs went right back to work. This time, 14 hitters went to the plate in the inning which yielded 11 more runs. The scoring was highlighted by a 3 run homerun by Jack Millard, his 1st of the season, and a 2 run homerun by Jacob Robinson. The Thunder fought back in the top of the 3rd, scoring 4 runs but the Redleg lead was still daunting at 19-7. In the bottom of the 3rd inning the Redlegs sent 15 men to the plate, scoring 10 more runs. Brandon Howard hit a grand slam in the inning.

After the 3rd the coaches agreed to end the game early, giving the Redlegs the run rule victory.
