Redlegs Blow Another Close One

08/15/2012

The Redlegs lost a heartbreaker in the 1st game of a double header against the Warren County Shockers.

Kevin Campbell took the hill in game 1 and kept the Redlegs in the game through 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 6 earned through his start. The Redlegs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st two frames. Millard reached on an error in the bottom of the 1st to lead off the inning and Taylor Patterson doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Brad Clark then hit a 2 run double to start the Redleg scoring. Matt Mattice led the 2nd inning off with a single and stole 2nd base before scoring on a single by Jared Bradley.

The Shockers would then score 3 times in the top of the 3rd to knot things up at 3. The Redlegs would quickly re-claim the lead in the bottom of the 3rd however. Robinson worked a 1 out walk and stole 2nd base and later scored on an error.

The 4-3 lead wouldn’t last. In the top of the 5th the Shockers scored 4 more times to take a 7-4 lead. Following the theme, that lead didn’t last long either. In the bottom of the 5th the Redlegs scored 5 more of their own, and it looked like they had things wrapped up with a 9-7 lead and only 2 frames to go. Howard had an RBI single, Long a 2 RBI bases loaded double. Benthal and Mattice added an RBI in the inning as well. The Shockers scored 1 in the top of the 6th to cut the lead to 1 run at 9- 8, staging their eventual comeback.

Robinson then turned to Brad Clark to nail down the save for the Redlegs, and Clark did his job, however the Redleg defense and a some timely Shocker hitting would be a combination that would cost the Redlegs the game. Clark retired the first batter of the frame, walked the 2nd, and then got an easy groundball that should have produced a game ending double play. The Redlegs weren’t able to get any outs on the play however, giving the Shockers runners on 1st and 2nd. After a fly out, Matt Stiffler hit a 3 run homerun that proved to be the nail in the coffin.

The Redlegs will hope to rebound against the Slammers in their next game on Sunday at Preble Shawnee High School at 1:00 and 4:00.
