Redlegs Roll; Advance to 3-3

05/14/2013

The Redlegs evened up their season record on Sunday by defeating the Springfield Indians 12-5 in 9 innings at Athletes in Action in Xenia. Kevin Campbell started on the mound for the Redlegs and turned in his best effort of the season, going 7 innings and striking out 5 while allowing only 4 hits and 1 run en route to his first victory of the 2013 season.

The Indians took the early lead on Campbell in the bottom of the 1st, stringing 3 hits together to score the game’s first run. But Campbell settled in quickly and allowed only 1 hit over the next 6 innings. Matt Mattice was able to tie things up in the 2nd with a 2 out RBI single. The Redlegs then took the lead in the 3rd and never looked back. Jacob Robinson and Jack Millard singled to start the inning before Robinson came in on a single from Kyle Arend. Brandon Longacre then drove 2 runs home with a single and later came around to score when Mattice grounded into a fielder’s choice. The Indians had a potential rally stifled in the bottom half of the 3rd after their leadoff hitter reached on an error and stole 2nd, but was then cut down trying to steal 3rd by Redlegs backstop James Robinson.

The score would hold at 5-1 until the Redlegs broke it open in the top of the 8th, scoring 6 runs to push their advantage to 11-1. James Robinson and Justin McCurdy led the inning off with singles before Matt Mattice drove his 3rd run of the game in on a single. Matt Morrison was then hit by a pitch to load the bases which led to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jared Bradley. Mattice then scored on a passed ball, and Morrison scored from 2nd with some very alert base running. Campbell and Robinson then walked before Arend drove a run in with his first triple of the season. The Redlegs scored once in the 9th as well, Longacre singled, moved to 2nd when James Robinson walked, and eventually scored on a passed ball.

The Indians did break through in the bottom of the 8th, scoring 4 runs in the frame, but it wouldn’t be enough to mount a comeback.

The Redlegs have 2 games next weekend, facing the Wright Knights on Saturday at 7:00pm at Athletes in Action and the Dayton Rangers on Sunday at 4:00 at Xenia High School.
