The Redlegs met up with the Rangers on Sunday in a non-league game, marking the 10th edition of the “Backyard Battle”. The Rangers previously held the advantage 5-4.
The Redlegs jumped out early when Kyle Arend singled and was brought in on a 2 run blast off the bat of Brandon Howard. But the Rangers wasted no time coming back, in the bottom of the 1st Joe Staten launched a 3 run homerun of his own to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead. The Redlegs tied things up in the 2nd when Justin McCurdy singled in Jack Millard who had doubled to lead off the inning.
After the Rangers put 3 more on the board in the bottom of the 2nd to take a 6-4 lead, the Redlegs scored again in the top of the 3rd. Kyle Arend was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a throwing error and then scored on a wild pitch. The Rangers got another in the bottom of the 4th to push the lead to 7-4. But then the Redlegs finally reclaimed the lead in the top of the 5th, scoring 4 times highlighted by an RBI double from Steve Benthal and a 2 RBI single by Kyle Weldon. But Joe Staten would strike again, punching a 2 out 2 RBI single through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the 6th to give the Rangers a 10-8 lead. Joe then came in for the top of the 7th to record the save for the Rangers.
