Sox Survive, Stay Undefeated

Just 10 days after a 14-5 loss against the Sox, the Redlegs went back to Rotary looking for a little revenge on June 30th.

The Sox jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they scored one run in each of the first 3 frames. The Redlegs got one back in the 4th inning when Kyle Arend led off the inning with a single, stole 2nd, and advanced to 3rd on an overthrow. Jacob Robinson then drove Arend in with a groundball up the middle that ended up a fielder’s choice. But the Redlegs scored 3 more times to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 5th. Matt Mattice started things off with a single followed by a single from Matt Morrison. Jared Bradley then doubled in Mattice and Kevin Campbell hit a groundball fielder’s choice to drive in Morrison. Bradley then came around to score on a double by Jackson Millard. With 2 outs in the frame and Millard on 2nd, Jacob Robinson drove a ball into right field that looked like it would give the Redlegs another run, but the Sox right fielder unleashed a perfect throw to get Millard on a close play at the plate.

Kevin Campbell, after giving up the 3 runs through the first 3, proceeded to hold the Sox to 1 hit from the 4th to the 7th inning. Caleb Elkins led off the 6th for the Sox and shot a line drive to shallow left field, but Jared Bradley got a good read on it off of the bat and made an excellent diving catch to kill a potential rally. The Sox reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the 8th. After a groundout, the next two runners reached base on a walk and single. Campbell was then able to get a strikeout. The next batter singled, but the Redlegs were able to get the ball to the plate in time to prevent the runner from trying to score, but he did get himself far enough away from the 3rd to try for the out. With the Sox runner retreating to 3rd, the Redlegs were unable to get the out and the ball ended up in left field which allowed two runs to score, giving the Sox a 5-4 lead.

The Redlegs weren’t done though. In the top of the 9th Matt Mattice and Matt Morrison singled back to back to start the inning. After a strikeout, Redlegs skipper Jacob Robinson put on the bunt to advance the runners and stay out of a possible double play situation. Kevin Campbell put down a good bunt, but the Sox were ready. Sox pitcher John Venters was able to pounce on the ball and fire it to 3rd for the force, and 3rd basemen Ian Huss was able to then relay it to 1st for a game ending double play.
