The Redlegs met up with the Dayton Rangers at Howell Field on July 13th for 2013’s first edition of the friendly rivalry, dubbed the Backyard Battle, between these two clubs. Rookie Kyle Weldon would get the nod against the Rangers while Rangers right hander Zach Carroll would take the hill for the Rangers in his first start of the season.

The visiting Redlegs would draw first blood as Jackson Millard started the game with a double. Kyle Arend then singled him in for a 1-0 lead. Jacob Robinson then singled to keep up the threat, but Carroll was able to work his way out of trouble and limit the damage to only one run. In the top of the 3rd the Redlegs put 3 more on the board. Kyle Arend walked with 1 out and moved to 3rd on a single from Jacob Robinson, but Robinson was quickly gunned down by Rangers backstop Brandon Riley. Kyle Weldon then singled in Arend and moved to 3rd when Brandon Howard doubled. Matt Morrison then drove in 2 runs with a single to make the score 4-0.

The Rangers threatened in the bottom of the 3rd. Zach Carroll singled with one out and looked like he might be stranded after Weldon punched out the next batter. But Brandon Riley singled to right field with 2 outs and Carroll made the turn to go to 3rd base. Redleg right fielder Jared Bradley fielded the ball cleanly and made a perfect throw to 3rd for the 3rd out of the inning.

The Redlegs started to run away with it in the 4th. Steve Benthal started things off with a one out single, Kevin Campbell walked, and James Robinson doubled both runners in. Robinson would later score on a single from Kyle Arend. The 5th would see 3 more runs cross for the Redlegs. Singles from Brandon Howard and Matt Morrison led things off before RBI singles from Steve Benthal and Kevin Campbell. James Robinson then smacked his 2nd double in as many innings while driving in another run.

The Redlegs would eventually score 3 more times, Kevin Campbell drove in a run in the 7th and Brandon Howard drove 2 in with a single in the 8th. The Rangers scraped a couple of runs together, scoring once in the 4th and once in the 7th. Kyle Weldon was able to go the distance, throwing all 9 innings for the Redlegs while giving up only 2 runs (1 earned) and striking out 7 Rangers hitters.

These two teams will square off again on Tuesday July 30th at 7:00 at Action Sports Center for their season series finale.
