Howard and Arend Go Deep, Redman Tosses Gem

07/19/2013

Matt Redman made his first start of the 2013 season for the Redlegs against the Wright Knights on Thursday July 18th, and he turned in an outstanding performance for the home team. Redman tossed his first career complete game as he pitched 7 innings, allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 7 Knight batters.

The Redleg offense has heated up with the July weather, the team batting average has quickly risen from .296 to .322. The team has not had less than 11 hits in any game since June 9th against the Royals, but has racked up 18 (Rangers), 16 (Slammers), 14 (Knights) and 16 (Mariners) in their last 4 games. Redman would not need any help on this night however.

Jackson Millard started things off in the 1st for the Redlegs getting his 1st hit in what would turn out to be a perfect 4-4 day for the leadoff hitter. Brandon Howard added an RBI single and James Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to get the Redlegs on the board. The Redlegs did most of their damage in the 4th inning when they plated 6 runs which would bring the game to a 10-1 score. Arend had an RBI double, Jacob Robinson a 2 RBI single, and Brandon Howard launched a 2 run bomb to highlight the inning.

Redman got a little help from right fielder Matt Mattice who made a great leaping catch on a line drive that almost got over his head in the 3rd. Matt tracked it back and made the jumping catch before landing on his back, the catch was for the 3rd out in the inning and left a runner stranded.

In the 5th inning Kyle Arend blasted his 1st career homerun, a 2 run shot right down the left field line that would extend the Redleg lead to 12-1. Matt Mattice would drive in the final run of the day for the Redlegs with a sacrifice fly in the 6th.

The Redlegs have now won 3 of their last 4 and will look to keep it going on Sunday against their divisional foe the Ohio Mariners.
