Redlegs Move into Tie for 2nd in Buckeye Division

07/24/2013

Kevin Campbell took the hill on Sunday night for the Redlegs and would turn in a solid performance that would earn him his 5th win of the year and would inch him closer to the Redleg single season strikeout mark set by Taylor Guntle in 2010 (48). Campbell now stands only 1 strikeout behind and will surely break the record in his next outing. Campbell would go 7 innings in this one, he struck out 4 and allowed only 7 hits to a very good offensive club in the Mariners.

The Redlegs would fall behind as the Mariners drew first blood in the 4th when Mike Hartman hit his first career homerun to give the Mís a 3-0 lead. But the Redlegs offense, after only managing 2 hits in the first 3 innings, roared to life in the bottom of the 4th. When the dust settled, the Redlegs racked up 7 hits, 3 walks, and 10 runs in the frame. Jacob Robinson walked with no outs before Brandon Howard singled and James Robinson walked to load the bases. After a strikeout for the first out, Matt Morrison continued his torrid hitting run by driving in a run with a single. Mattice then singled in a couple of runs. Steve Benthal later walked with 2 outs and the bases loaded to drive in a run before Jacob Robinson drove 2 runs in with a single. Brandon Howard and James Robinson also singled in runs before the 3rd out was finally made.

The Mariners did make things interesting by scoring 4 times in the 5th inning to make it a 10-7 game, but the Redlegs pulled away again in the 5th and 6th. Jackson Millard doubled home a run in the 5th to make it 11-7. Kevin Campbell, who replaced an injured Jared Bradley an inning earlier, drove 2 runs in with an RBI double to give himself a little cushion on the mound.

Brad Clark pitched what would turn out to be the final inning before the time limit ended the game early, he allowed only 1 hit and had one strikeout.
