Redlegs Win 7-0 Behind Millard's Shutout

08/12/2013

The Redlegs battled the Springfield Indians on Sunday in game 1 of a split double header for the Redlegs. The Redlegs were in need of a win as they continue to battle for a top 5 seed going into the playoffs that would result in a first round bye. A win would also tie the single season win record for the Camden club, as they won 16 back in 2010 in their expansion year.

The visiting Indians weren’t going to go down without a fight and threatened early, but the Redlegs were able to escape without giving up a run thanks to some good defensive play. Joey Cherry walked to start the game and moved to 2nd on a wild pitch. The next batter grounded a ball up the middle but Jacob Robinson was able to track it down and get the out at first while keeping Cherry from scoring. With 1 out and a runner in scoring position the Redlegs brought the infield in hoping for a ground ball and to prevent the Indians from getting the early lead. They got it, the next batter laced a groundball right at Kevin Campbell who was able to come up with it and hit Catcher Kyle Arend at home with a great throw and in plenty of time to nail the runner for the 2nd out. Starting pitcher Jackson Millard then recorded his first strikeout of the day to escape the inning.

The Redlegs answered by scoring 4 times in the bottom of the 1st. Jackson Millard was hit by a pitch and Kyle Arend doubled to put 2 runners on. Brandon Howard would double both runners in and would later score on a 2 run double by Matt Mattice.

The 4-0 lead would prove plenty for Millard, who ended up pitching the complete game. Millard allowed 0 runs, 3 hits, and struck out 5 batters on the day.

The Redlegs got some insurance in the 6th inning when they started the inning with 4 consecutive singles. Brandon Howard, James Robinson, and Brad Clark loaded the bases. Morrison and Mattice then each brought in a run with fielder’s choice ground balls and later Jared Bradley brought in the game’s final run when he reached on an error.
