The Redlegs opened up their 2014 season on Sunday April 13th
on a blustery afternoon at Athletes in Action sports complex
in Xenia. Kevin Campbell made his 4th consecutive opening
day start in hopes of starting the year off on the right
foot. Campbell got to work right away, allowing only 2 hits
over the first 3 frames.
Meanwhile, the Redlegs took advantage of some wild early
pitching from the A’s to put 3 runs on the board in the 1st,
all on past balls and walks, and 2 more in the 3rd
highlighted by a two out RBI single by Jared Bradley.
But that’s where the good news for the Redlegs ended, as the
A’s proceeded to put 21 runs on the board over the remainder
of the game. The Redlegs added another run in the 4th on an
RBI groundout off the bat of Jacob Robinson, and again in
the 8th when Jackson Millard knocked Jared Bradley in on a
sharp single to right field.
Defensively the Redlegs committed 4 errors on the day which
led to 5 unearned runs, but there were just as many
outstanding plays that helped the home team get out of jams.
In the 4th James Robinson gunned down speedy leadoff man
Brandon Kunkle stealing 2nd base to kill what was turning
into a big inning for the A’s, Brandon Howard made a nice
tag on the other end of the play. In the 7th, Jared Bradley
got full extension making a great diving catch coming in on
a fly ball in center field to end the inning and leave 2 A’s
runners stranded. In the 8th, short stop Jacob Robinson
made a diving grab behind 2nd base and was able to beat the
runner by a step at first thanks to a great scoop by James
Robinson at 1st, Brad Clark recorded a strikeout one batter
later to the end the frame. In the 9th, Robinson made
another sliding grab to his back hand and was able to make a
throw from his knees back to 2nd for a force out that ended
the A’s 9th leaving the basses loaded.
With Easter weekend coming up next weekend, the MVABL will
take a break and get back to action on the 27th of April.
The Redlegs will take on the expansion Mad River Machine at
4:00PM at Athletes in Action in Xenia.
