The Camden Redlegs got into the win column by knocking off
the Mad River Machine by a final score of 14-9 on Sunday at
Athletes in Action in Xenia. Pitchers from both teams had
to deal with a tight strike zone all day that resulted in a
combined 22 walks on the afternoon.
The Redlegs got to work right away, scoring 4 runs in the
bottom of the 1st and 2 more in the bottom of the 2nd to
jump out to a quick 6-0 lead behind starter Don Parrish. In
the first, Jackson Millard walked and stole 2nd and then
scored when Brad Clark singled. Brad then moved to third on
a Brandon Howard double. Brad would then come in to score
on a groundball to the right side from James Robinson before
Zach Carroll singled in Howard. In the 2nd, Jacob Robinson
singled with one out and came around to score on a triple
from Brandon Howard.
After allowing only one runner in the 1st inning, Parrish
got out of an early jam in the 2nd. The first two batters
for the Machine walked, but then first basemen Brad Clark
made a great over the shoulder catch in short right field to
hold the runners in place for the 1st out. Don then was
able to snag a comebacker and nail the lead runner at 3rd
before inducing an inning ending groundball. But the
Machine would break through in the 3rd thanks to a couple of
Redleg defensive miscues and timely hitting. Colby Clark
would come on in relief in the 3rd and was able to get out
of the jam, but by the time the dust had settled the Machine
had tied the game at 6. The Machine took a 7-6 lead in the
4th after a leadoff double and back to back walks put them
in a bases loaded situation with no outs. But Clark was
able to get a grounder to short and Jacob Robinson was able
to turn the unassisted double play before Clark ending the
inning with a strikeout to limit the damage to only 1 run.
But the Redlegs took the lead in the bottom of the 4th and
didn’t’ look back. They scored 3 times in the 4th and 3
more in the 5th highlighted by an RBI double from Jackson
Millard. Dalton Cox came in to pinch hit in a big spot in
the 7th and knocked two runs in with a double in his first
at bat of the season.
Meanwhile Colby Clark continued to roll in his Redlegs
debut. Colby went 5 2/3 innings in relief, picked up the
win, and struck out 12 along the way. Brad Clark then came
in to toss a scoreless 9th inning, picking up two strikeouts
in the frame. Brad got a little help from left fielder Matt
Mattice who ran down a sharply hit ball hit in the corner,
made a nifty sliding stop and popped up with a great throw
to hold the runners at 2nd and 3rd. Mattice also made a
nice diving snag in the 5th inning on a ball that looked
like it might drop into no man’s land between left, center
and short. Brad then induced a soft grounder to 2nd to end
the threat and the game.
