With Monroe being unavailable for play due to wet conditions
on Sunday, the Redlegs and Knights had to be moved to Howell
Field at a 7:00pm start time. The game lasted well into the
night, and eventually the Redlegs came out on top in a 17-13
win.
Kevin Campbell took the hill for the Redlegs and turned in a
solid outing to pick up the win. Campbell went 5 innings,
struck out 6, and allowed 3 earned runs.
The Redlegs had no shortage of offense in this one, but had
trouble putting the game away due to some shaky defensive
play throughout the night. The Knights put 3 unearned runs
on the board in the top of the 1st inning to take an early
lead, but the home team tied it up in the bottom half.
Jackson Millard walked to start the inning and stole 2nd
base after being caught in a lengthy pickle between 1st and
2nd. Kyle Arend then doubled Millard home. Jacob Robinson
then singled, his first of 5 hits on the night, to put
runners on the corners. Robinson then swiped 2nd and later
scored when Howard drove both runners in with a double. The
Knights came right back with a run in the top of the 2nd
before the Redlegs plated 8 , all with 2 outs, in the bottom
half to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Jared Bradley reached
on an error to start the inning and moved up on a passed
ball to get into scoring position. Jacob Robinson later
drove Bradley in with 2 outs to start the scoring. Brandon
Howard then singled and Brad Clark walked to load the bases.
James Robinson worked a bases loaded walk before Zach
Carroll brought a couple of runs home with a single. Matt
Mattice then singled in two more runs, his first of 4RBI on
the night. Morrison then singled to keep the inning alive
to bring Bradley back to the plate. Bradley then knocked
both runners home with a single.
The Redlegs never relinquished the lead after that, though
the Knights continued to keep the game close. In the 3rd,
James Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to
bring home another run. The Redlegs scored 4 more in the
5th. Kyle Arend, Brandon Howard, and Brad Clark all singled
before James Robinson was plunked again with the bases
juiced to bring in his 3rd RBI. Zach Carroll brought home
the next run with a single before Matt Mattice laced a
double into left center to bring two more runs around.
Brandon Howard gave a little breathing room in the 8th when
he knocked in Jackson Millard who had singled earlier in the
inning.
Zach Carroll entered the game in the 8th with a 16-13 lead
and tossed two scoreless innings allowing only 1 hit to earn
the save. Brandon Howard made an impressive over the
shoulder catch in short right field in the 2nd inning to
take away what could have been a leadoff hit for the
Knights. In the 9th, Kyle Arend gunned down a would be base
stealer to help preserve the win. Matt Mattice then made a
diving catch to end the game in right field.
