Carroll Tosses Complete Game in Win

05/25/2014

The Redlegs (3-2) and Mariners (2-5) met up for their first round matchup in the 2014 Memorial Day Tournament on Saturday. The Redlegs racked up 16 hits and scored 11 runs over the 9 inning game on their way to an 11-7 victory.

The offense started slow for the Redlegs as they couldn’t get anything going off of Mariners starter Chris Flaherty. Flaherty cruised through the first 4 innings and didn’t give up any runs until the 5th. Jared Bradley singled with one out in the 5th and Jackson Millard followed up with a single of his own to put two runners on. After a fielder’s choice to move the runners into scoring position, Jacob Robinson was able to reach on an error and both runs scored as a result. Trailing 3-2 going into the 6th, the Redlegs took the lead. They pushed 3 runs across in the 6th highlighted by an RBI double from Zach Carroll and an RBI single by Jackson Millard.

The Mariners scored 2 more in the bottom half however to tie things up at 5. But the Redlegs fired right back in the 7th. Jacob Robinson singled to start the inning and moved to third on a double from Brandon Howard. Brad Clark then doubled both runs in to increase the lead to 7-5. The Redlegs increased the lead by scoring twice in each in the 8th and 9th innings. In the 8th, Jared Bradley doubled with no outs and scored when Millard smacked his 3rd single of the day. Millard would later score when Jacob Robinson was able to reach on another error. In the 9th, Jared Bradley brought 2 runs home with a double, his 4th hit and 2nd double on the day. He drove in Zach Carroll who singled, and Matt Mattice who doubled.

Zach Carroll tossed the complete game for the victory, giving up only 3 earned runs and striking out 6 through the game. He struck out the side in the 5th. He got a little help defensively from Jared Bradley in the 4th when he gunned down a runner at the plate attempting to score from 2nd on a single. In the 8th, Jacob Robinson took extra bases away from Matt Piskor who lined a ball into the gap in right center. Robinson was able to track it down and make the diving catch to keep a runner at 1st.

The Redlegs will take on the winner for the Miami Valley Machine and the Dayton Rangers on Sunday at 12:00 at Xenia High School.
