Arend Goes Deep in Redleg Win

07/01/2014

The Redlegs earned two much needed wins on Sunday by sweeping a double header from the South Dayton Slammers to improve their record to 7-6. Kevin Campbell took the ball for the 7th time this season and turned in a nice start for the Redlegs as he picked up his 2nd victory of the 2014 campaign. Campbell tossed 7 innings, allowing 5 earned runs while punching out 3 batters in the start.

The Slammers jumped out to an early lead when Dean Grandfield smoked a double to the fence in left field in the bottom of the 1st inning to score the game’s first run. Dean would later come around to score to make it a 2-0 game. The Redlegs then tied things up in the 3rd frame. Jacob Robinson started the inning with a single and was brought home when Kyle Arend blasted his first homerun of the season, a towering shot over the left field fence. But the Slammers answered immediately. In the bottom of the 3rd Aaron Fannin hit a solo homerun to start the inning, his first of two in the game. After an error extended the inning, Jake Burke brought two runs in to give the Slammers a 5-2 lead.

The top of the 4th is where the Redlegs put the pressure on. Four hits, one walk, and 3 Slammer errors led to 6 runs which gave the Redlegs a comfortable 8-5 lead. Millard, Howard, Arend, and James Robinson each drove a run in during the frame. Matt Mattice walked and stole 2nd to get into scoring position to start the scoring, Mattice stole 5 bases in the game.

The Slammers would make things interesting though, they scored 2 in the 6th on Fannin’s second homerun to make it a 1 run ballgame. Campbell trotted out to finish things off in the 7th and promptly retired the first batter with a pop fly to center field. The 2nd batter walked before Campbell recorded his 3rd strikeout of the game for the innings 2nd out. But a 2 out single put runners on first and second leadoff man Eric Murphy to the plate with Fannin on deck. Campbell then retired Murphy with a pop out to 2nd base to end the game and secure the Redlegs win.
