A's Big 5th Sinks Redlegs

07/18/2014

The Redlegs couldn’t muster up any offense in support of Matt Redman as his record took its first blemish this season in a 7-2 loss to the Fairborn Athletics. Redman pitched well in the start, but the A’s were able to push 6 runs across in a disastrous 5th inning that lead to their victory.

The A’s drew first blood as they scored one run in the bottom of the 1st when Joey Watson singled in Matt Addis who led the inning off with a single. But the Redlegs tied things right back up in the 2nd. Matt Mattice reached on an error start the inning, stole his league leading 16th base, then scored when Matt Redman delivered a 2 out single into right field.

The A’s threatened in the 4th, but with 2 outs catcher Jackson Millard made a full extension diving catch in foul territory down the 1st base line to record the final out in the frame and leave 2 runners stranded. Redman helped himself out again by starting a rally in the 5th with a single. Kevin Campbell reached on an error to put runners on the corners and Matt Morrison hit a sacrifice fly to put the Redlegs up 2-1. Jackson Millard then doubled putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. The rally was then stymied when Jacob Robinson was rung up on a highly questionable strike 3 call on a full count which allowed the A’s to get out of the jam.

The A’s capitalized immediately, coming out and scoring 6 runs in the bottom half of the 6th. Redleg rookie Andy Evans then came on for his debut on the hill with one out in the 5th and he cruised through the remaining 1 and 2/3 innings racking up 4 K’s while allowing only 1 hit.

The Redlegs will send perennial workhorse Kevin Campbell to the hill on Sunday against the Gem City Braves. These two teams met up earlier in July and the Redlegs took both games in the double header, winning 15-10 and 9-6.
