Redlegs Outslug A's in Big Win

08/06/2014

The Redlegs continue to play good baseball as they knocked off another tough opponent on Tuesday night at Action Sports Center to improve their win streak to 6. Just two days after defeating the top seeded Machine, they took down the 4th seed Fairborn A’s 18-12.

The game was very close through the first 5 innings as neither team could build up any momentum and grab a secure lead. The Redlegs drew first blood in the top of the 1st inning when Jackson Millard drew a one out walk and moved to 3rd when Jacob Robinson doubled. Brandon Howard then knocked Millard in with a single. The A’s tallied one in the bottom half to square things back up, only to have the Redlegs score twice more in the 2nd. Justin McCurdy started the 2nd off with a single and moved to 3rd on a double by Zach Carroll. Jared Bradley then hit a groundball to 2nd to bring McCurdy home. Matt Redman then hit a hard groundball to short, but the A’s shortstop was able to handle it and deliver a perfect toss to the plate to get Carroll and spoil an extra run for the Redlegs. But Redman then stole 2nd base and scored when Matt Morrison singled him in.

The A’s cut down the lead to 3-2 by scoring again in the bottom of the 2nd, but then took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd as they scored two more runs to make it a 4-3 game. The Redlegs then put together a 4 run inning in the 5th that looked like it might finally put the A’s away. Jacob Robinson started the inning with a walk followed by a Brandon Howard double. Kyle Arend then singled both runners home. Matt Mattice then singled and stole 2nd before McCurdy cleared the bases with another hit which gave the Redlegs the 7-4 lead. But the A’s just wouldn’t go away, they scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead back down to 1 run. Andy Evans kept the A's potent offense down through his 5 innings of work as he allowed just 4 earned runs while striking out 6.

That’s when the floodgates opened. The Redlegs put together a 10 run 6th that saw 15 batters step up to the plate. Highlights included an RBI double by Matt Mattice, a 2 run double from Zach Carroll, and a 2 run single by Jacob Robinson. This put the game away for good despite the A’s tacking on 6 runs near the end to at least make things interesting, but the Redlegs were able to hold on to the 18- 12 win.
