Redleg Arms Rack Up 18 K's in Win

04/27/2015

After a two week layoff due to league wide rain outs last weekend, the Redlegs got back in action on Sunday against the upstart Wild Boars Baseball Club. The time off didn’t seem to effect the Camden club as they cruised to an 11-4 victory for their first 2-0 start in franchise history.

Pitching was the big story for the Redlegs. A combination of Andy Evans, Matt Redman, and Brad Clark resulted in 18 strike outs and 4 runs (3 earned) on the day. Evans made his first start of the 2015 campaign and started missing bats right away. He racked up 9 strikeouts through the first 3 innings, but plunked 4 batters in the process which resulted in an early exit and brought Redman in from the bullpen in the 4th.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, Jackson Millard drew a 1 out walk, Jacob Robinson was hit by a pitch, and Brandon Howard walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Kyle Arend unloaded the bases with a 2 out triple to give the Redlegs an early 3-0 lead.

The Boars were able to tie it in the top of the 4th. Redman Relieved Evans with 2 outs and the bases loaded and the Boars were able to sneak two hits through the infield to plate 3 runs and tie the game. Redman would settle in to allow only 1 hit as he struck out 7 over the next 4 innings.

The Redleg offense meanwhile would take a permanent lead in the bottom of the 4th when they scored 4 runs to make it a 7-3 game. Brad Clark doubled to start the inning, Kyle Arend walked before Matt Mattice got his first of two hits to drive in Clark. Later with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Jared Bradley did his job by hitting a ground ball to the right side to plate the innings 2nd run. Matt Morrison would later drive a run in with a single and the Redlegs would pick up an extra run on a Boars throwing error. Morrison drove in another run in the 6th inning to increase the lead to 5 before the Redlegs put the nail in the coffin when they scored 3 more in the 7th. Howard reached on an error to start the inning, Clark walked, and Arend brought both home on a double increasing his RBI total to 5 on the day. Arend eventually made it to 3rd with one out and Mattice got in on some fundamental baseball by hitting a ground ball to the right side to score the run. Brad Clark entered the game on the mound in the 9th and tossed a scoreless frame despite two Redleg miscues to end the game with a final score of 11-4.

The Redlegs will get a tough test next weekend as they take on the Fairborn Athletics at 4:00 in Monroe. The A’s ended the Redlegs season in 2014 with a 2 game sweep in the semi-finals of the MVABL playoffs.
