Arend Goes Deep in Redlegs First Loss

05/18/2015

The Slammers spoiled the Redlegs undefeated start on Sunday winning a close game at a final score of 8-6. Kevin Campbell (2-0) struck out 5 Slammers through the first 3 innings but was hung with 6 runs (2 earned) before exiting early.

The Redlegs looked like they might strike first when Matt Morrison led the game off with a single. He moved up to 2nd on a wild pitch and then on to third when Jackson Millard put a ball on the ground to the right side of the infield. But a ground out and fly out would leave Morrison stranded at 3rd, the first of 10 runners the Redlegs would leave on the base paths in the game.

Trailing 1-0, the Redlegs scored 2 in the top of the 3rd to take the lead. Jared Bradley was hit by a pitch and Matt Morrison singled before Jackson Millard brought both runners home with a double. But the Slammers took the lead right back in the bottom half. An untimely fielding error extending an inning that saw 4 slammers cross the plate to take a 5-2 lead. They played add on in the 4th by scoring another run, which led to Matt Redman entering the game for the Redlegs. Redman promptly retired three straight batters, two of them by strikeout, to get out of a jam and hold the deficit at 4 runs.

The Redlegs then got an offensive outburst that they sorely needed, they scored 4 times in the top of the 6th to tie the game at 6 apiece. Jacob Robinson started the inning with a walk and Brandon Howard singled to put two runners on. Brad Clark then singled to drive in Robinson just before Kyle Arend launched a 3 run bomb over the left field fence. Arend has already knocked 8 runs in through 4 games this season, almost half of his 2014 total (20) which was tied for 2nd on the team. Justin McCurdy later singled and Jared Bradley doubled, both with 2 outs, but the Slammers were able to leave the runners stranded to hold the game in a tie.

The Slammers reclaimed the lead immediately by scoring twice in the bottom of the 6th. With an 8-6 lead they brought in Nate Stevens to try and hold back the Redleg offense and he delivered in a big way. Stevens tossed the final three frames and recorded 9 strikeouts to secure the win for the Slammers.

The Memorial Day Tournament is next on the docket for the Redlegs. They enter the tournament as the #1 seed and will play the Miami River Marlins on Saturday May 23rd at 1:00 at Howell Field. The Mad River Machine will play the Wright Knights at 4:00 at Howell and the two winners will square off in the championship on Sunday at Centerville HS at 1:00.
