Millard and Howard Back Campbell in 15-4 Win

The Redlegs were back in league play action on Sunday after spending the weekend participating in the Memorial Day tournament. While most teams were off for the holiday, the Redlegs got an extra two games in and were able to avoid a 2 week hiatus on the schedule. The offense was clearly still sharp as they sprayed 21 hits and scored 15 runs on the Boars over 9 innings after scoring 17 and 8 last weekend in the tournament.

After taking his first loss of the season against the Slammers back on May 17th, Kevin Campbell got the nod and went to work against the Boars in an effort to get back in the win column. Campbell didn’t disappoint as he worked quickly and ended up turning in his 2nd complete game effort on the young season. He allowed 4 runs and struck out 7 batters as he easily picked up his 3rd win of the year.

The visiting Redlegs drew first blood in the top of the 2nd inning. Matt Mattice began the rally by leading off with a single, then stole 2nd base to get into scoring position. Mike Hartman then plated Mattice and moved to third when Jared Bradley doubled. Both runners would eventually score thanks to two Boars miscues which resulted in a 3-0 Redleg lead. After Campbell struck out the side in the 2nd, the Boars knotted things up in the bottom of the 3rd thanks in part to a 2 RBI double by Eric Nelson.

But the Redleg offense answered in the top of the 4th by scoring 6 times and essentially put this one to bed in the early going. Hartman led the inning off with a double which was followed by a single and stolen base from Jared Bradley. Matt Redman then made a productive out by hitting a ground ball to the right side to score a run. Matt Morrison copied Redman and drove another run home with a groundball out. With 2 outs and the bases empty, Jackson Millard blasted a home run over the right field fence to start a 2 out rally. Jacob Robinson followed with a single before Brandon Howard launched a bomb of his own. Kyle Arend then singled, stole 2nd, and scored on a base hit by Matt Mattice.

In the 5th Matt Morrison picked up an RBI to push the lead to 10-3. The Redlegs played a little add on in the 8th, scoring 4 times to push the lead to 14-3. Jacob Robinson started the inning with a walk, Howard reached on an error and Arend drove a run in with a base hit. Matt Mattice then knocked a run in with a sacrifice fly followed by an RBI single from James Robinson. Jared Bradley would later drive Robinson in with a single. The last run for the Redlegs was scored in the 9th, Matt Morrison singled with one out and scored on a Jackson Millard double. The Boars were able to push one more run across in the 9th but the Redlegs concluded the game well in control and advanced their record to 4-1 on the season.
