James Robinson Goes Deep in Game 1 Win Over Royals

06/16/2015

The Redlegs hoped to stretch their win streak to 3 games against the Kettering Royals in game 1 at Belmont HS on Sunday. They ran Kevin Campbell out to the hill for the 7th time this year in search of his 6th win.

The Royals got a couple of hits in the first but Campbell stranded those runners. The Redlegs came up in their half of the first and got to work right away. Matt Morrison led the inning off with a walk. He stole second and was driven in by a single by Jackson Millard. Jacob Robinson singled to put two on. A batter later, Kyle Arend doubled home Millard and put runners on second and third. Matt Mattice singled to drive in both runners to give the Redlegs a quick 4-0 lead and they weren't done yet. Mike Hartman worked a walk and Zach Carroll drove in Arend with a single. A batter later, James Robinson lined one over the left center field wall for a 3-run homerun to put the Redlegs up 8-0 after 1.

Campbell gave up another two singles in the second but again wiggled out of trouble with a strikeout to end the inning.

After the 8-run first, the Redlegs were looking to play add on but their bats went quiet. Royals pitching sat down 10 consecutive Redleg hitters between the end of the first and the 5th inning.

In the third, Campbell continued his trend of giving up a few singles before escaping unscathed. This time he got some help from his defense. Kevin Reynolds singled to lead the inning off. That was followed by a bloop into right field by Derek Barnhart. Right fielder Mike Hartman scooped up the ball on a hop and fired the ball on a line to Morrison at third to nail Reynolds trying to take the extra base. Campbell got more help from his defense in the 4th when Mattice made a nice diving catch in the left center field gap to rob Tyler Eaton of extra bases. The Royals finally got to Campbell in the 5th. After two quick outs, Campbell walked the next two batters before giving up an RBI single to Reynolds.

The Redlegs bats finally came back to life in their half of the 5th when Matt Redman led the inning off with a double. Morrison singled to put runners on the corners and Millard doubled them both home to extend the lead to 10-1. Robinson followed with a single and Brandon Howard took one for the team to load the bases for Arend. Arend singled to drive in two more to make it 12-1. A 6th inning bases loaded walk by Howard ended the scoring for the Redlegs at 13.

Zach Carroll came in relief of Campbell to try to give the right arm of the league leader in innings pitched a bit of a break. He allowed a run on two hits in the final two frames to close it out and give the Redlegs their 8th win on the year.
