After falling to the Beavercreek Sox in a tough 7-5 loss
back in early June, the Redlegs rebounded on Sunday
defeating the Sox for only the 2nd time in franchise
history. The game came down to a very exciting finish
but the Redlegs would hold on with a 6-5 win.
The Redlegs took the lead right out of the gate as they
scored 3 times in the bottom of the first inning.
Jackson Millard worked a one out walk, Kyle Weldon then
singled, and Kyle Arend brought 3 home with a deep blast
over the center field fence. The scored twice in the top
of the 4th to chip away at the lead, but the Redlegs
stormed back and put 3 more on the board in the 5th.
Jacob Robinson started the inning with a walk before
Jackson Millard dropped a perfect sacrifice bunt to move
him over to 2nd base. After a strikeout, Brandon Howard
launched a ball to the base of the fence in right center
field. Howard was able to motor around for an in-the-
park homerun with a little help from the outfield fence
as it grabbed onto the Sox right fielder and wouldn’t let
go. Kyle Arend, who hit an in-the-parker just one week
before thanks to a cleat stuck in the fence, hammered his
2nd bomb of the game to follow up Howard and give the
Redlegs a 6-2 lead.
Kevin Campbell started on the hill once again for the
Redlegs and kept yet another explosive offense quiet,
three of his six innings pitched were 1-2-3 innings. But
in typical Redleg fashion, the game became very
interesting in the top of the 7th inning. Campbell got
two ground balls to start the inning, but both turned
into extra outs for the Sox as the Redleg defense, which
was solid all game, committed an error on each hit. A
single, double, and walk later, the Sox had brought the
game within 1 run and had no outs with runners on 1st and
2nd. At this point the Redlegs brought in Brad Clark to
try and nail down the save. The first batter sacrificed
the runners to 2nd and 3rd. With the infield drawn in,
Clark induced a ground ball right at Kyle Weldon at 1st.
Weldon checked the runner to prevent the run from scoring
and tapped on 1st to record the 2nd out of the inning.
Clark then got another ground ball, this time a high
chopper to Matt Morrison at 3rd base. Morrison was able
to make a leaping snag, set his feet, and fire to 1st to
get the out just in time and to secure the win for the
Redlegs.
