Offense Stays Hot in 23-10 Win

04/25/2016

The Redlegs started Sunday by putting up 15 runs in game 1 of the double header against the Boars and they followed that up with 23 more in game 2 as they pounded out 23 hits as a team.

Jacob Robinson led off the game with a solo shot to left center field, his first home run since 2012 and 10th of his career. Jackson Millard and Kyle Arend were each plunked and would later be driven in by Kyle Weldon and a sacrifice fly by Brad Clark.

The Boars looked like they might get something going in the bottom half of the first when Meade Tabata launched a one out liner into the gap in left center, but center fielder Jacob Robinson was able to track it down and haul it in with a diving catch that ended with him sliding head first into the fence. Redlegs starter Matt Redman ended the inning a batter later by getting an easy pop fly out into left field.

Wild Boars starter, and first overall pick in the 2016 MVABL draft, Brandon Lucas settled in and held the Redleg offense in check over the next 3 innings, yielding no runs and only 4 hits. Meanwhile the Boars tied things up when Max Anderson sent a fly ball sailing over the left field fence driving in 3 runs in the process.

The Redlegs broke the game wide open in the top of the 5th which resulted in 11 runs and a commanding 14-3 lead. Jackson Millard and Kyle Arend started the inning with singles and were both brought home on a double by Kyle Weldon, his first of two 2-run doubles in the inning. Brad Clark then walked, Morrison hit a run scoring single, Matt Mattice singled, and Jared Bradley knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Greg Pfieffer kept things going with an RBI single, followed by a walk to Jacob Robinson and an RBI single by Jackson Millard. Arend then brought in 2 more runs with a hit, Howard walked, Weldon doubled in 2 runs, and Brad Clark singled in another to round out the scoring.

Matt Mattice provided a run in the top of the 6th when he singled, stole 2nd, and came around to score on single from Jacob Robinson.

Trailing 15-5, the Wild Boars made things interesting as they got to the Redlegs bullpen and scored 5 times in the bottom of the 6th to make it a 15-10 game. But the Redlegs essentially put it away in the top of the 7th, scoring 8 more times to extend the lead to 23-10. Morrison, Mattice, Millard, and Arend each had an RBI and Jared Bradley and Brandon Howard each had a pair of RBI.

Kyle Weldon entered the game and tossed a scoreless 7th inning to finish off the game.

The Redlegs are back in Monroe next weekend (May 1st) at 1:00 and 4:00 against the South Dayton Slammers.
