The Kettering Royals avenged an 11-9 loss to the Redlegs
back on April 17th by topping the Redlegs 9-5 yesterday
at Howell Field.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead by plating 3 runs
in the bottom of the 1st, highlighted by a 2 run double
by Evan Koogler. After a quiet 1st and 2nd inning, the
Redlegs clawed their way back into the game by scoring
twice in the 3rd. Jackson Millard roped an RBI double
and Kyle Arend collected an RBI single in the frame.
The Royals kept the pressure on Redlegs starter Kevin
Campbell by adding 2 more in the 3rd to extend the lead
to 5-2. But the Redlegs answered again, this time
scoring 3 more in the top of the 4th to tie things up at
5. Matt Morrison manufactured a run to start the inning
as he singled, advanced to 2nd on a passed ball, stole
3rd, and scored on a throwing error. Millard later drove
in a couple more runs with his 2nd double of the game.
But the Royals would not be contained as they scored 3
more in the bottom of the 4th to get back on top 8-5.
Eric Williams came on in relief and held the Royals in
check over the final 4 2/3 innings as he allowed only 1
run and 1 hit, but the Redlegs offense was also stymied
down the stretch. Ryan Valentine relieved Evan Koogler
in the 7th and allowed only 1 hit, James Robinson,
through the final 3 frames as he fanned 6 Redleg hitters.
Now standing at 3-3, the Redlegs will look to get back in
the win column as they face the Dayton Rangers next
weekend at 10:00am in Monroe.
