The Redlegs took on the Dayton Rangers, looking for
revenge from opening day where they blew out the Redlegs
21-6. New comer Aaron Carmack was on the hill for his
first start in a Redlegs uniform and he was opposed by
opening day winner Joe Becker.
Carmack ran into a little trouble in the 1st when Nick
Gilmore doubled down the right field line with one out,
but after a walk, he escaped the inning unscathed. In
the bottom half of the inning, the Redlegs got right to
work to take a quick 2-0 lead. Jake Robinson led off the
inning getting hit by a pitch. Kyle Arend then drew a
walk and they were both driven in by a pair of RBI
singles from Brandon Howard and Brad Clark.
Carmack cruised through the Rangers batters allowing only
one more base runner through the 4th inning as the
Redlegs continued to add to the lead. With two outs in
the third, Howard doubled and scored on a single by James
Robinson. Again with two outs in the 4th, Matt Redman
got a rally started with a single followed by Jake
Robinson drawing a free pass. Jackson Millard drove
Redman in with a single before Arend stepped up and blew
the game open with a 3-run bomb to left giving the
Redlegs a 7-0 lead.
In the 5th, the Rangers finally put a little pressure on
Carmack. Brandon Marshall led the inning off with a
double and John Connell drew a walk. But an infield
popup and two ground outs quieted the rally and the
shutout was preserved.
The Redlegs added two more in their half of the 5th.
Clark led off the inning with a line drive homerun to
left to make it 8-0. Matt Morrison singled and tried to
score on a single by Matt Mattice and was gunned down at
the plate by Rangers center fielder Todd Peck. Jared
Bradley doubled to drive Mattice home to make it 9-0 but
was also cut down at the plate by Peck on a single by
Redman.
The Rangers finally dented the plate against Carmack in
the 6th. Gilmore led the inning off with a single. A
fielder’s choice, a walk, and a hit batsman loaded the
bases for Kody Barth. Carmack got Barth to ground softly
back up the middle, but his only play was to first as
Robert Riley crossed the plate to make it 9-1. The next
batter hit a hard smash down the third base line that
Matt Redman made a great play on, lunging to his right to
knock down. He popped up and fired the ball across the
infield where Brad Clark made a clean pick of the tricky
hop to end the inning. Carmack settled back down and
allowed only one more base runner in his final two
innings of work.
The Redlegs tacked on one more in the 8th and Mattice
came on to close out the game with a 1-2-3 9th and a 10-1
Redlegs win.
