The Camden Redlegs and the league leading South Dayton
Slammers squared off under the lights Thursday night at
Action Sports. The Redlegs and Slammers both sent out
pitchers with 3-1 records. Aaron Carmack for the
visiting Redlegs and Dan Comes for the Slammers.
The Redlegs wasted no time jumping out to a lead. In the
first inning, Jackson Millard smoked a double over the
center fielder’s head and one out later was driven in by
a single by Brandon Howard.
The Slammers tied it in the bottom of the second when
Rick Anderson singled, advanced on a fielder’s choice and
a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor
Hause.
Comes settled down and retired the Redlegs in order in
the 2nd and 3rd innings allowing his offense to claim the
lead in the bottom of the 3rd. Todd Barnhorst led off
the inning with a triple to left center. Carmack got
the next hitter to bounce back to the mound to hold the
runner at 3rd, but Dan Barnhorst delivered the runner
home with a sacrifice fly to give the Slammers a 2-1
lead.
The Redlegs answered right back and reclaimed the lead in
the top of the 4th. Millard and Kyle Arend both singled
to begin the inning. After a fly out, Joey Watson
reached on an error to load the bases. James Robinson
then put the ball in play to the shortstop to get the run
home
and tie the game, but that ball was also kicked and he
reached base safely and the bases remained loaded. One
out later, Jared Bradley worked the count full and with
the runners moving, looped one into right field to drive
in two more and give the Redlegs the lead again at 4-2.
The Redlegs played add on in the 5th when Jake Robinson
hit a one out triple down the right field line. Millard
was then hit by a pitch and Howard drew a walk to load
the bases. Watson roped a ball down the left field line
to score Robinson and Millard to give the Redlegs some
insurance at 6-2.
Comes settled back down and, with the help of some base
running mistakes, held the Redlegs at 6 the rest of the
way.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Slammers began to chip away
at the lead. Dan Barnhorst singled and stole second
before an RBI single by Anderson made the score 6-3.
In the bottom of the 7th, Hause shaved the lead to only
two with a lead off bomb to left. Cody Clark followed
with a single and a pair of errors loaded the bases
putting
the tying run on second and the winning run on first.
After a meeting on the mound, the Redlegs decided to
stick with Carmack and he promptly struck out the next
batter. A sacrifice fly brought the Slammers within one
at 6-5 with the tying run still in scoring position and
the winning run sitting on first, but they were down to
their final out. Carmack induced a
ground ball to shortstop Matt Morrison who was able to
knock it down and flip it to Howard at second for the
fielder’s choice to preserve the lead and the win.
