Redlegs Prevail in Shortened Game

07/08/2016

As the rain continued to fall, the powers that be decided to start game 2 immediately to take advantage of the field condition and try to avoid postponing to another date. Field conditions were wet but playable and it seemed the most hardship fell to the pitchers who were having a hard time keeping their cleats clear of mud and keeping solid footing. Matt Redman, who tossed a scoreless inning in relief of game 1, started game 2 and tossed 3 solid innings allowing only 1 run while striking out 3 batters.

After the Royals scored their first run of the game in the top of the 3rd, the Redlegs tied things right back up in the bottom half. Jacob Robinson started the inning with a single and was driven in on a base hit from Kyle Weldon.

Brad Clark took over in relief of Redman in the 4th and the Royals were able to scrape 3 hits together that resulted in 2 runs and a 3-1 lead.

Clark would then help himself out as he started the bottom half of the 4th inning with a single and eventually came around to score on a one-out base hit by Matt Morrison. Clark would then face only 3 batters in the top half of the 5th with the help of a 6-4-3 double play and a fly out to left field.

The Redlegs then rallied in the bottom of the 5th. Jacob Robinson walked, Kyle Weldon singled, and Brandon Howard singled to load up the bases with one out. Brad Clark then delivered an RBI single to tie the game followed by an RBI knock by Joey Watson to give the Redlegs a 4-3 lead.

At that time, officials stopped the game as the rain had picked up during the 5th inning and field conditions worsened. After conferring with league officials, since the MVABL follows NCAA rules the following rule was applied and the game was ruled complete:

NCAA Rule 5, Section 10:

“If the team last at bat shall have made more runs at the end of its fourth inning, or before the completion of its fifth inning, than the team first at bat has made in five completed innings, the umpire shall award the game to the team second at bat; and it shall count as a legal game.”

Now standing at 10-5 and riding their longest win streak of the season (4), the Redlegs will look to keep rolling when they face the Wild Boars Baseball Club on Sunday 7/10 at 4:00pm at Howell Field in Dayton.
