Kevin Campbell took the hill in Game 2 to try to start
another winning streak. He was opposed by the Slammers
Darren Himsworth.
The Redlegs kicked off the scoring in the 2nd when two
walks and a Brad Clark single loaded the bases to start
the inning. One out later, Mike Hartman singled to give
the Redlegs a 1-0 lead. A pair of strike outs followed,
limiting the damage to only 1 run.
The Slammers tied the game in the top of the third when
Pat Kerttula doubled and scored on a Todd Barhorst
single.
The Redlegs answered by plating 4 in their half of the
third. Jake Robinson singled and stole second base and
scored on a double by Jackson Millard. One out later,
Joey Watson drew a walk and Clark drove in Millard with a
single. Matt Morrison drove in another run with a single
and Hartman added on with a sacrifice fly to give the
Redlegs a 5-1 lead.
Dan Barnhorst chipped a run off the Redlegs lead with a
5th inning home run to make it 5-2.
The Slammers rallied and claimed the lead in the 6th.
Campbell allowed a lead off single and the next hitter
reached on an error to bring the tying run to the plate.
Campbell was relieved by Brad Clark to try to put out the
fire. The Slammers weren’t done though. After a ground
out, Rick Anderson singled in a run to make it 5-3. Dan
Barhorst then hit a two run double to tie the game.
David Schwehm followed with another double to score
Barhorst and give the Slammers their first lead of the
day at 6-5.
In the bottom of the 6th, Morrison singled to lead off
the inning and stole second. Matt Mattice tied the game
with a single to score Morrison. A strike out and a
ground out ended the inning and sent the tie game to the
7th.
Kevin Campbell re-entered to retire the Slammers in order
in the 7th.
The Redlegs went into the 7th trying to avoid extra
innings and come away with the win. After the lead off
batter was retired, Kyle Arend stepped to the plate. The
Slammers were able to frustrate him all day, coming in 0
for 5 combined between the two games of the double
header.
Slammers reliever David Schwehm got a curve over for a
strike. Arend then worked the count back in his favor
before Schwehm reached back and fired a high fastball
that Arend took a big hack at and came up empty. Arend
worked the count full and Schwehm tried to sneak another
fastball by him. Arend didn’t miss this one. Instead,
he delivered a walk off win by hammering a no doubter
over the left field fence. The dramatic homerun gave the
Redlegs a huge win over another front runner in the
MVABL. Not only was it Kyle Arend's first career walk
off home run, but it was also the first in Redlegs
history!
