Redlegs Fall Short in 5-4 Loss

04/14/2017

After a comeback victory on opening day, the Redlegs found themselves in a similar situation only 6 days later against the very same team. The Machine held a 5-4 lead after 5 innings and the Redlegs threatened but ultimately could not pull off another miracle.

Despite pitching very well and leading the MVABL in strikeouts after the first 2 weeks, Aaron Carmack does not have much to show for it in terms of wins and losses. He took the no decision on opening day and, thanks to limited run support, would be tagged with the loss in his 2nd outing.

The Redlegs jumped right out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Jacob Robinson walked followed by a single by Kyle Arend. Joey Watson then scored Robinson with a single and Arend would eventually score as he stole 2nd, moved up to 3rd on Watson’s single, and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile Carmack cruised right through the first 3 innings, retiring the first 9 batters he faced. The Machine finally got on the board in the 4th though, as they used 6 hits to score 5 runs. Carmack then only faced 3 batters in each the 5th and 6th as he closed out the game on a quiet note. Carmack only allowed one baserunner outside of the 4th inning.

The Redlegs brought the game within one in the top of the 5th. Watson singled followed by a walk to Brandon Howard. James Robinson then moved the runners up with a ground ball on the right side of the infield before Mike Hartman singled in a run. Brandon Howard would then score on a wild pitch.

The Machine were then able to escape a 6th inning that saw the bases loaded with Redlegs and again in the 7th as the Redlegs stranded 2 more as they were unable to get anyone in. Despite the 6th not bearing any fruit, Nick Davis recorded his first MVABL hit with a one out single to start the potential rally. All in all the Redlegs stranded 13 runners in the game. Things would only get worse in the nightcap as the Machine fed off the game 1 victory while the Redlegs faded into the night.
