Campbell's Strong Start Not Enough In 1-0 Loss

06/26/2017

Remember the last time the Redlegs and Slammers got together back on May 7th and it took 10 innings to decide a winner? It was noted in the recap for that game how often the games between these two clubs end up being very close. Well, chalk another one up in the “one run game” category as the Slammers scratched out a rare 1-0 victory over the Redlegs on a Thursday night game at Athletes in Action back on June 15th.

Unsurprisingly in a 1-0 game, the pitching was outstanding in this matchup. The Redlegs sent Kevin Campbell to the hill and he turned in an outstanding effort against the potent Slammers line up. Campbell pitched 7 2/3 innings and allowed only 1 run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts in a gut wrenching loss. The Slammers split the pitching duties between Dan Comes and Tanner Lee. Each pitched 4 innings and gave up a meager 2 hits to the Redlegs.

Jacob Robinson picked up the Redlegs first hit in the bottom of the 1st and stole 2nd base but would eventually be stranded. The Redlegs only managed to get one other runner to 2nd base in the game (Ryan Gross in the 5th). Mike Hartman picked up the team’s 2nd hit in the bottom of the 2nd.

The Slammers finally pushed their lone run across in extra innings. Campbell punched out the first batter of the 8th but the Slammers were able to load the bases with 3 consecutive walks, which prompted a call to the bullpen. Aaron Carmack entered into a tough spot with 1 out and the bases loaded and Troy Koze greeted him with a base hit single right back up the middle. The runner from 3rd scored easily but the Slammers tried to score the runner from 2nd and he was cut down as center fielder Jacob Robinson gunned him down at the plate. Carmack then struck out the next batter giving the Redlegs a chance in the bottom of the 8th.

Tanner Lee would have no Redlegs heroics. He retired the side in order and struck out the final batter for good measure.

Both teams will take the weekend off and then prepare to face off again in a double header the following weekend on June 25th.
