Slammers Force Season Series Split, Win 13-7

06/26/2017

The Slammers offense would not be held down for another game though as they pounded out 13 runs on 13 hits in game 2. The Redlegs plated 7 of their own, but never held the lead in the nightcap.

After the Slammers put an early 3 runs on the board in the top of the 1st, Matt Mattice singled in the bottom half and was driven in by Joey Watson. The Redlegs then tied it up at 3 in the 2nd. After a run was allowed to score on a Slammers error, Jacob Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to get the tying run across.

The Slammers then dropped a 4 spot on the Redlegs in the 3rd, highlighted by a 2 run blast off the bat of Todd Barhorst. Now trailing 7-3, the Redlegs chipped away in the bottom of the 3rd. Joey Watson and Mike Hartman hit back-to-back doubles to get one run closer, cutting the lead to 7-4.

However, the Slammers took the run back in the 4th, 3 more in the 5th, followed by their final 2 runs in the 6th. Trailing 13-4, the Redlegs did try to rally but would still come up well short. In the 6th Adam Parks singled followed by a walk to Jared Bradley. Jacob Robinson then singled in a run. Next, Matt Mattice slashed a hard grounder to 1st that the Slammers were able to turn a nice double play on, forcing Mattice out at 1st and getting Bradley at 3rd. Arend then doubled to score the final run of the frame. Adam Parks notched his 2nd hit of the game when he singled in Nick Davis in the 7th.

The Mad River Machine took advantage of the Redlegs and Slammers beating up on each other and leapfrogged both teams to take first place after a double-header sweep of the Miami Valley Expos. The Slammers and Redlegs remain 0.5 games back of the MVABL lead.

Next up for the Redlegs will be the Wright Knights in a 9-inning affair at Madison High School on July 2nd at 1:00PM.
