Royals Force Split in Nightcap

07/14/2017

Game 2 went the other way, with the Royals jumping out early by scoring 5 times in the top of the 1st inning. Arend and Hartman got a run back in the bottom of the 1st as Arend tripled with 2 outs and Hartman followed it up with a double. The 2nd inning went quietly before it looked like the Royals would play add on in the 3rd. The Royals had the bags loaded with 2 outs when John Ramsey launched a deep fly ball into the left-center gap. Redleg centerfield Jacob Robinson was able to track it down and make a diving snag just shy of the fence.

The Royals kept the pressure on though, scoring 7 times in the 4th and 5th innings. The Redlegs offense kept pace, but simply left too many baserunners stranded to make a dent in the lead. After leaving a runner on in the 1st, 2nd and leaving the bases loaded in the 3rd, the Redlegs did get a run in the 4th. Adam Parks led off with a single and stole 2nd, followed by a single from James Robinson to put runners on the corners. James Gross then notched an RBI base hit. Royals starter Ryan Valentine then ended the threat by recording 3 straight outs to strand 3 more baserunners.

Matt Mattice launched a one out double off the top of the right field fence in the 5th and later scored off of a base hit by Mike Hartman. Mike increased his hit streak to 16 games, the 3rd longest streak in Redlegs history. Hartman was driven in by Adam Parks who then stole 2nd, moved to 3rd on a passed ball, and timed up a perfect steal at home as he took off just as the ball was being delivered back to the pitcher.

Zane Vogelsang belted his 4th home run of the season in the 7th to end the game’s scoring as the Royals finished up the 13-5 win to avoid the season sweep from the Redlegs.
