Early on, it looked like game 2 was going to be all
Redlegs as they started the game by racking up 6 runs in
the first 2 innings. Adam Parks and Matt Mattice started
things off with back to back singles in the top of the
1st. Kyle Arend then reached on an error, which allowed
Parks to score. Later, Brandon Howard delivered a 2 run
single and James Robinson added an RBI single to give the
Redlegs a 4-0 lead.
First Baseman James Robinson made a nice catch in foul
territory in the bottom of the 1st as he ranged deep into
foul territory and snagged the high pop up over his
shoulder to record the 2nd out of the inning.
Parks and Mattice then both singled to start the 2nd
inning, and later Mike Hartman singled to load the bases.
Joey Watson then hit a sacrifice fly to score Parks, and
Mattice moved to 3rd. Hartman then stole 2nd, and
Mattice alertly scored on the throw down to 2nd base.
The Knights roared right back into the game in the bottom
of the 2nd, using 3 hits and a pair of Redleg miscues to
score 5 times making it a 6-5 game.
Starting Pitcher Kevin Campbell rebounded after the
Knights 5 run frame and turned in a scoreless 3rd,
helping himself out with two excellent defensive plays.
Anthony Turner doubled to start the inning, followed by a
flyout to record the 1st out. The next batter hit a soft
grounder in no man’s land between 3rd base and the
pitcher’s mound, but Campbell made his signature play of
making a sliding stop and quickly firing to 1st to get
the runner by a step. The next batter placed a grounder
in almost the same exact spot, and Campbell again made
his sliding stop, this time flipping to Ryan Gross at the
plate, who made the tag on another very close play.
Gross then started the next inning off with a double and
scored on an RBI single by Adam Parks, pushing the Redleg
lead to 7-5. The Redlegs then went down in order in the
4th and 5th innings.
The Knights took their first lead in the bottom of the
5th, as they scored 3 times highlighted by a 2-out 2-run
single by Alec Hutzelman. Things could have been worse
however, but Jared Bradley made a clutch sliding catch in
left field with the bases loaded to end the inning and
keep the deficit at one run.
After the Redlegs stranded a runner in the top of the
6th, the Knights poured 4 more runs on in the bottom half
to take a commanding 12-7 lead. The Redlegs did try to
rally in the top of the 7th as Matt Redman and Ryan Gross
drove in a run each, but the Knights would escape the jam
and hold on for the 12-9 win.
