Camden Offense Erupts En Route to Round 1 Sweep

09/11/2018

Game two turned out to be much less stressful as the Redlegs controlled throughout and cruised to a 12-5 victory.

Luke Campbell got the nod and picked a great time to turn in his best performance of his rookie campaign. Luke tossed the first 3 1/3 innings and gave up 2 earned runs, 5 hits, and added 2 strikeouts. The Redlegs got to work in the top of the 1st inning. Jacob Robinson singled to start the game, followed by a walk to Nick Davis, and a base hit by Kyle Arend. Back- to-Back strikeouts followed which put a damper on the rally, but Brandon Howard was plunked by a pitch to bring home the game’s first run.

Camden put four more runs on the board in the 2nd highlighted by a sacrifice fly by Nick Davis, an RBI by Mike Hartman, and a 2-run single by Joey Watson. Meanwhile, Luke was cruising. He allowed only two baserunners through the first 3 frames and one reached on an error.

The 4th inning saw the Redlegs score 6 more times. Jacob Robinson singled and stole 2nd to start the inning, Nick Davis then singled before Kyle Arend brought both runners home with a triple. Mike Hartman then singled in a run, followed by a hit by Joey Watson. Brandon Howard was hit by another pitch to load the bases. Ryan Gross then doubled home two runs before Zhelun Wang notched his first RBI as a Redleg with a sacrifice fly.

The Boars finally got to Campbell in the bottom of the 4th highlighted by a leadoff bomb by Dylan Pletsch. A couple of Redleg miscues led to a Boar rally and three more runs came around to score. Kevin Campbell was brought on in relief and was able to get out of the jam without further damage.

The Redlegs scored their 12th run in the 6th when Kyle Arend singled and stole 2nd and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Joey Watson. The Boars added one more in the bottom half of the 5th to make the score 12-5, but that’s when the Redlegs put things away for good with a 5 run top of the 6th. Ryan Gross started the rally by belting a one-out double to straight-away center field. Zhelun Wang then hit a sharp line drive into left field for his first hit as a Redleg, followed by an RBI single by Jacob Robinson. After a flyout for the 2nd out, Kyle Arend singled in a run and Mike Hartman doubled home two more. Joey Watson finished off the scoring with an RBI single.

Mother nature decided that was the time to call it quits, as lightning in the area forced the game to be called. The final score reverted to the end of the 5th inning, giving the Redlegs the 12-5 victory.

The Redlegs will next take on the Kettering Royals in the semi-finals on Saturday 9/15 at Wright State’s Nischwitz Stadium at 4:00 and 7:00.
