After dropping 3 straight games, the Redlegs got things
back on track with a big 18-7 win over the Dayton
Cardinals on Sunday.
Michael Cookson got the start for Camden, filling in on
short notice after regularly scheduled starter Kevin
Campbell was scratched due to back stiffness. Cookson
pitched well and would eventually pick up the win after 5
innings of work, striking out 6 Cardinal batters along
the way. Cookson now has a healthy 51 strikeouts over 37
innings of work on the 2019 season.
The Redleg offense got to work right away in the top of
the 1st inning and would keep on the pressure throughout,
in fact, they did not trail at any point of the game.
Matt Morrison led off the 1st with a single and quickly
scored when Jacob Robinson ripped a stand-up triple into
the right center field gap. Kyle Arend then drove
Robinson in with a single.
Leading 2-1 entering the 3rd inning, the Redlegs rattled
off 7 more runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Morrison
again singled to start the rally, stole 2nd, and scored
on a throwing error that allowed Jacob Robinson tor each
1st base. Mike Hartman then doubled Robinson home and
Hartman moved to 3rd on a base hit by Nick Davis, his
first of 4 hits on the day. Joey Watson then added an
RBI single, followed by a walk to James Robinson which
loaded the bases. Everybody moved up a bag on an RBI
single by Matt Redman before Matt Mattice cleared the
bases with a double.
The Cardinals chipped away in the bottom of the 3rd,
scoring twice to make it a 9-3 game. Mike Hartman then
got things started again in the top of the 4th with a
two-out double. Nick Davis then followed suit, hammering
a double into the right center field gap to extend the
Redleg lead to 7 runs.
The Cardinals kept hanging around, scoring two more times
in the bottom of the 4th to cut the lead to 6 runs at 10-
5. But Camden put together another big inning in the top
of the 5th, sending 6 more runs home to put things out of
reach at 16-5. James Robinson started things off with a
one-out single, followed by walks to Matt Redman and Brad
Malott. Matt Mattice then came up with another big bases
loaded hit, driving 2 runs home with a single. Isaac
Marquez then drove a run home with a sacrifice fly before
Matt Morrison drove a run home with another single.
Morrison stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on a throwing error
before Jacob Robinson was plunked to put runners on the
corners. Robinson then swiped 2nd and moved to 3rd on an
overthrow that allowed Morrison to score. Kyle Arend
then singled Robinson home to finish off the inning’s
scoring.
Brad Malott drove a run home in the 6th to put the
Redlegs up 17-5.
Isaac Marquez then made his 2019 debut on the mound and
turned in a solid scoreless inning of work on the hill,
allowing just 1 hit and striking out a batter.
Camden scored their final run of the day in the 8th when
Joey Watson doubled home Kyle Arend who had singled to
lead off the frame.
Aaron Carmack tossed the final three innings for the
Redlegs and allowed just 1 earned run while piling up 5
strike outs.
The Redlegs (7-5) get a break this weekend before taking
on the Dayton Indians (0-10) at Madison High School on
July 14th at 1:00 and 4:00.
