Camden came away with another “win one lose one” double
header day, this one of the split variety as they took on
the Dayton Rangers at 12:00pm and the Wild Boars at
3:00pm on Sunday at Madison High School.
Game one featured a 9 inning affair with the Rangers and
things were tight through the first 6 innings. The
Redlegs drew first blood by scoring thrice in the first
inning and twice more in the second, all 5 runs being
recorded via the long ball. The 2nd started when Jacob
Robinson was plunked with one out. Later with two outs,
Saige Micomonaco reached on an error that extended the
inning for Joey Watson to blast a 3 run bomb over the
left field fence. Matt Mattice then started the 3rd with
a single followed by a two-run shot by rookie Brad
Malott, the first of his career.
The Rangers then erased their deficit in the bottom of
the 3rd by plating 4 runs with the help of some fielding
miscues by the Redlegs and three timely base knocks.
They added another unearned run in the 4th to knot things
up at 5-5.
The Rangers then took the lead in the bottom of the 6th
when Brandon Marshall drove in Nick Gilmore with a
single. The duo of Marshall and Gilmore were a thorn in
the Redlegs side all day as Gilmore went 5 for 5 a couple
of runs batted in and Marshall went 3 for 4 with 4 RBI.
All in all, Aaron Carmack followed up his 16 strikeout
performance well in his start against the Ragners,
allowing only 3 earned runs while punching out 6 batters
over 6 frames of work. Despite the strong outing,
Carmack was trailing after 6, as the Rangers held the
slim 6-5 advantage. That’s when the Redleg offense
exploded, rattling off 14 runs over the final 3 frames.
In the top of the 7th Camden got two runners on right
away thanks to a walk and a runner reaching on an error.
Adam Parks then roped a 2-run triple to put the Redlegs
up by a run. Matt Morrison was then hit by a pitch which
led to a 2 RBI double from Jacob Robinson.
Now leading 9-6, Camden turned to a familiar Ranger foe
in Kevin Campbell. The Rangers were able to scratch a
couple of runs together and looked to be threatening to
do a lot of damage, but two nice plays would help to
bring an end to the potential rally. After a lead-off
single, the next batter hit a hard grounder that Kyle
Arend was able to snag by diving to his left. He then
fired to second from his knees just in time to beat the
lead runner. Then later with the bases loaded and one
out, Matt Morrison snagged a hard hit grounder and start
the inning ending twin killing with middle infield mate
Brad Malott. Campbell would go the rest of the way and
earn his first save of 2019.
Camden put 5 more runs on the board in the 8th
highlighted by an RBI base hit from Matt Morrison and a
sacrifice fly by Kyle Arend. 5 more runs were recorded
in the top of the 9th capped off by Jacob Robinson’s
second two-run double of the game.
