Redlegs Start 1-0 With Run Rule Win

06/08/2020

After having their 15 inning affair with the Rangers postponed in week 1, the Redlegs finally got their first official game in the books on Sunday against the Knights. Camden left no doubt this time around as they got down to business right away and ended up cruising to a 15-1 run rule victory after 7 innings.

Early on it looked like a low scoring affair, as both teams were blanked through the first three frames and combined a total of eleven strikeouts. The Redlegs finally broke the silence in the top of 4th when Matt Morrison singled, Jacob Robinson walked, and Mike Hartman singled to load up the bases with no outs. Saige Micomonaco and Joey Watson were each then plunked to bring a run home each, later a run scored on a passed ball.

Camden then put things away in the 5th when they sent 13 batters to the plate with yielded 10 runs and a 13-0 lead. Redleg hitters were walked 7 times in the inning, but the scoring highlights came from a 2-run double by Matt Morison and a 2-run single by Mike Hartman.

The Knights were able to get one back in the bottom of the 5th on a double by Alec Hutzelman, and that would turn out to be the only blemish on Aaron Carmack’s first victory of the 2020 season. Aaron piled up 10 strikeouts in his 5 innings of work while allowing just 4 hits and the lone run. Carmack reached a couple of noteworthy regular season milestones in the start as he eclipsed the 250 strikeout mark and notched his 20th career victory.

The Redlegs then added two insurance runs in the 7th. Jacob Robinson walked and Mike Hartman doubled to start the frame. Saige Micomonaco, who had walked or been hit by a pitch in his previous 3 at bats, then logged his first official at bat with an RBI base hit. Brandon Howard rounded up the scoring by bringing a run home with a ground ball fielders’ choice.

Kevin Campbell and Michael Cookson each turned in a clean inning of relief work in the 6th and 7th, making for a quiet finish to the contest.

Camden (1-0) will take on the Kettering Royals (2-0) this coming Sunday at 1:00 at Madison High School. Michael Cookson is on tap to make the start for the Redlegs.
