The Redlegs got their first look at the 2020 South Dayton
Slammers squad on Tuesday night and in typical Redlegs
Slammers fashion the game turned into a real nail biter.
In the end, the Slammers would pull out the victory on a
walk off single in the bottom of the 8th inning to edge
Camden 4-3. The Slammers have now won their last 9 games
against the Redlegs, the last Camden victory came on June
10th, 2018.
Aaron Carmack took the hill for the Redlegs with a
daunting task ahead of him. The 2020 Slammer offense has
produced 126 runs over 10 games so far this season, 33
more than the next closest team in the Kettering Royals.
The fewest runs they have produced all season was 7 when
they were defeated in their lone loss to the Wright
Knights. But Carmack was up to the challenge as he kept
the reigning champs offense at bay. He scattered 9 hits
over 8 innings of work, striking out 3 while allowing
just 1 earned run in a terrific outing.
Carmack had some stiff competition on the other side, as
the Redlegs offense had to deal with former White Sox
prospect Taylore Cherry. Cherry blanked the Redleg
offense over the first 3 frames, racking up 5 strikeouts
in the process.
Trailing 3-0 in the 4th, Camden finally put something
together against Cherry and would end up tying the game
by the time the inning ended. Jacob Robinson started
things off with a leadoff double and was promptly driven
in on a base hit by Saige Micomonaco. Joey Watson later
singled in a run and was then plated on an RBI double by
James Robinson.
This led to the Slammers turning to former EKU and Urbana
pitcher Nick Bozman who promptly blanked the Redlegs over
the remaining 4 innings.
Camden did threaten in the top of the 8th when Matt
Morrison singled and was moved over to 2nd on a sacrifice
bunt by Jacob Robinson. Saige Micomonaco then advanced
Morrison over to third with a ground ball to the right
side. But Bozman buckled down and picked up a clutch
strikeout to end the threat.
The Slammers then walked it off on an RBI single by Mark
Barhorst in the bottom of the 8th, spoiling a great
outing from Carmack and handing the Redlegs their 2nd
defeat of the season.
Camden is back in action tomorrow at 1:00 and 4:00 at
Madison High School against the Kettering Royals.
