Jones Does it All, Howard Belts 38th HR in Win

Camden finally got off the schneid in week 3, as they came away victorious in 2021’s first installment of the “Backyard Battle” versus the Dayton Rangers. The Redlegs were firing on all cylinders in this one, as they pounded out 16 hits while holding the Rangers to only 5 hits in the 14-4 victory.

Brad Malott doubled with one out in the top of the 1st, followed by a single off the bat of Kyle Arend. Jacob Robinson, running for Arend, swiped 2nd base and both he and Malott would come around to score via the wild pitch. Malott scored again in the 3rd as he singled and eventually came around to score on a base hit from Jesse Jones, one of his 5 hits on the afternoon. With three weeks in the books, Jesse’s 5 hit day moves him into a tie for the league lead in hits with 8 on the young season.

Camden then put things away in the top of the 5th, sending 14 men to the plate while tallying 9 more runs in the process. Mike Hartman, , James Robinson, Cody Saraco-Polner, Eric Jameson, Jacob Robinson, Brad Malott, and Jesse Jones all added an RBI in the frame.

Brandon Howard finished up the scoring for the Redlegs in the top of the 8th when he blasted his 38th career home run, a 2-run shot that moved him into sole possession of 4th place for home runs in MVABL history.

While the offense was piling up run support for Jesse Jones in his first start of the 2021 season, it would turn out that he didn’t need much help at all. Not only did was he getting it done with the stick, recording an impressive 5 for 5 day at the dish, Jesse turned in 8 innings of outstanding work on the mound by striking out 6 Rangers while allowing just 5 hits. The defense also played well behind him, committing just one error in the game. Brad Malott and Brandon Howard teamed up on a picturesque twin killing in the bottom of the 6th to erase a leadoff baserunner.

Kyle Arend finished things out in his 2nd career appearance on the mound, turning in a 1-2-3 9th inning to complete the game.

With the win, Camden improves to 1-2 as they now look forward to a matchup with the undefeated Wild Boars (3-0) in a double header at Madison High School on Sunday at 1:00 and 4:00.
