Smith Fires 1-Hit Shutout in 12-0 Victory

07/28/2021

The Redlegs finally got back in action on Sunday after a 4 week break thanks to rain, the July 4th holiday, and the All-Star break.  Prior to the break they had won 9 of their last 10 games and they didn’t look rusty at all, keeping up the momentum with a 12-0 run rule victory over the Southern Ohio Stars.

The game got off to an exciting start as Stars leadoff man Nicholas Antonides hammered an offering from Lucas Smith into the left center field gap.  What looked to be extra bases was taken away as Jacob Robinson was able to track it down and make a diving snag in front of the warning track.

Camden would get on the board in the bottom of the 2nd when Lucas Smith singled with one out and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Robinson.  After a scoreless 3rd inning, the floodgates opened up in the 4th and the Redleg runs poured home for a total of 9 in the inning.  Lucas Smith, Kevin Campbell, and Ian Brown each singled to start the frame, followed by an RBI single from Jacob Robinson.  Mike Hartman and Kyle Arend then each walked a run home just before Brandon Howard and James Robinson each singled in a run.  Kevin Campbell would later walk in a run, and Evan Koogler would chip in with a two run single.

Kyle Arend roped his 2nd double of the game to lead off the 5th and would later score on a fielding miscue by the Stars.  Eric Jameson drew a walk and also scored thanks to an error to round out the scoring for the Redlegs at 12 runs.

Lucas Smith made his 2nd start for Camden and turned in an absolute beauty.  He held the Stars completely hitless up until the final Stars batter in the top of the 7th, who hit a sharp single up the middle to break up the no- hit bid.  Regardless, Smith’s gem included 7 strikeouts and only 4 baserunners allowed, two via walks, one reached on an error, and the single in the 7th.  Lucas picks up his first MVABL win in the effort, and lowers is season ERA to 2.25 over 12 innings pitched.

The Redlegs are back in action on Sunday 8/1 vs. the Mad River Machine at Howell Field at 4:00pm
