The Redlegs got the Mother's Day victory over the Astros on Sunday, winning by a
final tally of 9-5.
Taylor Guntle took the hill for the Redlegs, making his first starting appearance
in his brief MVABL career. "T-Gun" silenced the Astros bats for most of the day,
allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs, and piling up 9 strikeouts in a complete game
effort.
The Redlegs continued their trend of scoring early by putting 4 runs on the board
in the first inning, all the damage being done with two outs. Taylor Guntle
reached first after being hit by a pitch and Brandon Howard and James Robinson
walked in succession to load the bases. John Long then brought in two runs with a
double to right center, one of his four hits on the day. After Andrew Alcorn
reached on an error, which scored James Robinson, Dalton Cox doubled in Long in his
first MVABL at bat.
The Astros fought back in the 2nd, putting 3 runs on the board helped largely by 3
Redleg errors. But after that it was smooth sailing for Guntle and the Redlegs. In
the 4th inning, Robinson led off with a single, and promptly stole second, allowing
Mattice to drive him in with a double bringing the score 5-3. In the 7th Howard
singled, followed by a walk to Robinson, then Long and Alcorn delivered back to
back RBI singles to give the Redlegs a 7-3 advantage. Long also added some nifty
glove work in the bottom of the frame, saving a possible run on a diving catch at
3rd. The Redlegs gave Guntle a bit more cushion in the 9th as John Long led off
with his 4th hit of the day and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alcorn
- Alcorn was able to reach on an error however. Dalton then singled to load the
bases. Bradley then brought Long in on a sacrifice fly, and Alcorn scored on a
wild pitch to end the Redlegs scoring. The Astros put added runs in the 8th and
9th but it wasn't enough, the Redlegs went on to win 9-5.
Historical Notes: John Long - first 4 hit game in franchise history.
