Camden kept up their winning ways on Thursday night as
they defeated the Wright Knights by a final score of 5-1.
The team has now won 5 straight and 12 of the last 13.
While the offense certainly did enough to win, the story
here was Evan Koogler’s first start on the mound as a
member of the Redlegs. Coming into the game with only 7
innings pitched on the season, Koogler matched that total
by turning in a complete game effort and only narrowly
missed notching a shut-out. Koogler faced only 3 batters
in 4 of the 7 innings and gave up only 2 hits in the
entire game, he also recorded 6 total strikeouts. The
Knights were able to push a run across in the 7th,
spoiling the shut-out.
Koogler helped himself out with the bat in the first
inning, driving in two runs with a two-out single. Jacob
Robinson had walked to start the game, followed by a
single by Jesse Jones and both scored on Koogler’s base
hit.
The first batter of the game for the Knights reached on a
fielding error, and the next batter hit a ball into the
right-center field gap. Jacob Robinson was able to track
it down in the gap and double up the runner at 1st base
to spoil any potential damage the Knights had in mind.
The score stood at 2-0 until the 5th inning when the
Camden offense finally provided a little more run support
for Koogler. Jesse Jones started things off with a
double, followed by a base hit by Kyle Arend. Brandon
Howard then doubled both runners’ home to extend the lead
to 4-0. Howard would eventually come around to score on
a fielding error to make it 5-0.
The leadoff man for the Knights reached on an error in
the 7th and would eventually score on a groundout, but
other than that Koogler was able to lock down the final
frame without any hint of a comeback.
The Redlegs next take on the South Dayton Slammers in a
double dip at Madison High School on Sunday 8/8 beginning
at 1:00pm.
