Redlegs Fall Just Short in Loss to Scouts

08/18/2021

The Redlegs and Scouts met up for an important game on Sunday as both teams were tied for first place in the standings and playoff seeding on the line.  The game didn’t disappoint and turned out to be a tight contest all the way to the end.  When the dust settled, the Redlegs fell just short in a 6-4 loss.  The offense managed to pound out 15 hits, leaving a staggering 10 men stranded throughout the day.

On any other day you would think that Tyler Eaton’s performance would have warranted a win going up against the Scouts, who have scored more runs than any other team in the league this season.  Eaton went 8 strong innings against the powerhouse lineup and yielded just 8 hits and 5 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.  Eaton eventually fell victim to the tough luck loss despite the strong outing.

After the Scouts struck first in top of the 3rd, the Redlegs reclaimed the lead in the bottom half.  Eaton reached on an error to start the inning, swiped 2nd, and then scored on double by Kevin Campbell.  Jacob Robinson later singled, and a throwing error in from the outfield allowed Campbell to score from 3rd base.  They extended the lead to 3-1 in the 4th when Jesse Jones reached on a fielder’s choice, swiped 2nd, and scored on a base hit by Tyler Eaton.

The Scouts later pushed 3 across in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead, only to have the Redlegs score again in the bottom to tie things up at 4-4.  After a flyout and groundout started the inning, Mike Hartman and Jesse Jones each singled to keep the inning alive, which allowed Tyler Eaton to drive a run home with a double.

The Scouts added runs in the top of the 8th and 9th to extend the lead to 6-4.  The Redleg defense held strong in the 9th as Eric Jameson made a picturesque over the shoulder catch on the warning track in left field.  Evan Koogler ended the top of the 9th by gunning down a would- be base stealer at 3rd base.  Camden threatened, loading the bases in the 8th and having runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 9th but ultimately did not get a run across the plate.

Next up for the Redlegs (15-6) is the Dayton Rangers (12- 9) at Rotary Park in Beavercreek on Thursday 8/19 at 7:00pm.
