Much like the Redlegs 2021 opener where they fell to the
Xenia Scouts by a score of 21-3, they stumbled out of the
gate again in 2022 as they lost to the Dayton Rangers by a
final tally of 17-4. The Redlegs started slow in the month
of April last season, opening up at 1-3 before rattling off
12 wins over their next 14 games in May, June, and July.
Jesse Jones made his first career opening day start and had
to work through some jitters in the first inning. The
Rangers used a couple of hit batters and a couple of walks
to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Jones settled in nicely though
and surrendered only one earned run over the next 4 innings
of work while piling up 6 strikeouts in the process.
Thanks to the sporadic Ohio weather, this was the first live
action the Redlegs had this season. It showed on defense
too, as Camden committed a whopping 8 errors in the game.
The Redleg offense was also still groggy from the long
winter rest, as they scraped together just 4 runs on the
afternoon. Jacob Robinson scored in the first, coming home
on a balk after walking to start the inning. Jesse Jones
would score in the 3rd on a throwing error before Kyle Arend
singled and Mike Hartman walked. Both would then score on a
2-run single by Matt Mattice. Chris Flaherty added one of
the Redlegs 3 hits with a double in his first game as a
Redleg.
Kevin Campbell had a solid 2022 debut as he tossed 3 innings
of relief, allowing only one run and one hit while picking
up one punchout.
The Redlegs take on the Xenia Scouts (1-0) in the 2nd game
of the season today at Valley View High School at 1:00pm.
