The Redlegs experienced a bit of déjà vu in their opener
last weekend as they fell to the reigning champion Dayton
Rangers by an almost identical score as their 2022 opening
day matchup. In 2022 the Rangers bested the Redlegs 17-4,
this time around it was 17-5. Of course, this is nothing
new to Camden as they have tended to start slowly in recent
years. In fact, they are 1-4 in their last 5 opening day
matchups and last season they didn’t even get their first
win until May. That hasn’t stopped them from having success
though, as the Redlegs have turned in a 58-36 record in
those seasons and appeared in the championship just last
year.
The Redlegs did get on the board first in the top of the 2nd
inning when Matt Mattice drew a walk and later came around
to score on a single by Joey Watson. Camden’s additional
scoring came as a 3-run 5th inning where James Robinson
worked a walk and Eric Jameson singled to start the frame.
Jacob Robinson then brought both runners home with a base
hit, then later scored on a fielder’s choice by Kyle Arend.
Joey Watson scored the Redlegs 5th and final run in the 6th
inning with some heads up base running, scoring from 2nd on
a double play attempt by the Rangers.
Next week the Redlegs will take on the 1-0 Springfield
Angels in a double header at Kettering Fields at 1:00 and
4:00.
