Late Comeback Not Enough

The Redlegs fell to the South Dayton Slammers on Sunday by a final score of 13-12 as the Slammers held on despite a late rally from the Redlegs. Taylor Guntle took the hill looking for his 4th win of the season and pitched well, going 5 innings striking out 4 and giving up only 1 earned run and 1 hit.

The Slammers took the early lead in the top of the 1st inning as P.J. Dixon led of the game with a walk, stole second, and ended up scoring as a result of a couple Redlegs miscues. Skipper Rick Anderson added a solo homer in the 2nd giving the Slammers the 2-0 lead and marking the only hit that starter Taylor Guntle yielded before he exited the game in the after the 5th inning. The Redlegs fought back in the bottom of the 2nd as Guntle doubled and was later brought in on a double from Brandon Howard. In the 4th the Redlegs took the lead as Mattice led off the inning with a double, Brad Clark then walked, and Derek Graham stroked an RBI single bringing in Mattice. Guntle then singled in Clark, and Graham was brought in on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Brian Kuhbander. Jacob Robinson relieved Guntle on the mound in the 5th inning and the Slammers quickly jumped back in front, scoring 7 times in the inning; 5 of the 7 runs being earned. After a quick 7th inning, Robinson gave way to newcomer Kevin Campbell in the 8th. Campbell pitched the 8th and 9th innings and kept the Redlegs alive giving up only 2 earned runs, however entering the bottom of 8th the Redlegs trailed 13-4. In the bottom of the 8th Zach Clendenen led off with a walk, followed by a single from Jacob Robinson. Mattice then grounded out to the right side moving the runners to 2nd and 3rd giving Brad Clark the opportunity to drive in 2 on a single of his own. Guntle then drove in Clark with his second double of the day bringing the Redlegs to within 6. In the 9th Howard led off being hit by a pitch, followed by a walk to John Long to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Jared Bradley then roped an RBI double, followed by a walk to Zach Clendenen to load the bases. Jacob Robinson then doubled to right bringing in 2 more runs and later scored on an RBI groundout from Mattice. Clark then scorched a ball to 2nd, reaching on a questionable error, to represent the Redlegs tying run. Derek Graham then flew out to deep left field to end the game, leaving the Redlegs one run shy of the comeback.
