Redlegs Win Back and Forth Affair With Scouts

The Redlegs won a thriller against the Xenia Scouts last weekend at Gastineau Field, scoring six runs in the final two frames in the 12-11 victory.  Ben Schooler notched the win in relief while Evan Koogler drove in four runs to lead the offense.

Camden jumped out early, scoring twice in the top of the first.  Jacob Robinson was plunked to start the game, followed by a double by Max Ramsey.  Ben Schooler and Evan Koogler than delivered back-to-back RBI to put the Redlegs up 2-0.

The Scouts cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the first, but Camden kept pace in the top of the second.  Matt Mattice started the inning with a walk and swiped 2nd and 3rd before scoring on a base hit by Eric Jameson, extending Camden’s lead to 3-1.

The Scouts offense exploded in the bottom of the second, scoring 6 times to take a 7-3 lead that they would not relinquish until the final inning.

Camden added a run in the third to make a 7-4 game, but the Scouts kept the pressure on by plating three more runs in the fourth to take the 10-4 advantage.

Matt Mattice walked in a run in the fifth to chip away at the Scouts lead, and Ben Schooler knocked in a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-6.

Schooler took over on the mound for the Redlegs in the bottom of the fifth and proceeded to blank the Scouts over the next four frames.

Still trailing 10-6 going into the eighth, Camden battled back by scoring two more times in the top half.  Jacob Robinson and Max Ramsey each walked to begin the inning, and both later scored on a line drive off the bat of Evan Koogler.

After another scoreless frame from Schooler in the 8th, Camden put four more runs on the board in the top of the ninth.  James Robinson singled, followed by a walk to Eric Jameson to put two on with no outs.  Justin Lynch then delivered the biggest hit of the game, a two-run single that tied the game at 10-10.  After making his way to second on the throw from the outfield, Lynch swiped third and then scored the go-ahead run on a fielding error.  Evan Koogler later padded the lead with another RBI single to give Camden the 12-10 lead.

The Scouts weren’t done though, finally getting through on Schooler as they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.  Schooler then notched a clutch strikeout for the first out of the inning.  The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring the run from third, but Jacob Robinson was able to cut down the runner attempting to move from second to third to end the game at 12-11.
