The Redlegs looked to take the season series against the
Miami Division leading Dayton Rangers on Sunday at Preble
Shawnee High School. In the exciting back and forth
slugfest the Redlegs emerged victorious by a score of 12-11.
The two teams combined for 31 hits and 6 home runs in the
game.
At the start, the game appeared it would be a pitchers duel
between the two teams' ace pitchers. Taylor Guntle (5-0)
took the hill for the Redlegs and Jonathon Silverman (6-1)
started for the Rangers. The Rangers struck first in the
1st inning, scoring twice as a result of a couple of Redleg
errors. The Redlegs later tied the game in the top of the
3rd. With two outs, Robinson doubled and was driven in on
an RBI single by Matt Mattice. After a walk to Taylor
Guntle, Derek Graham drove Mattice in to tie the game. The
Rangers took the lead again in the bottom of the 5th as Tim
Sullivan singled in James Robinson, who had doubled earlier
in the inning.
In the top of the 6th the Redlegs regained the lead scoring
twice on Rangers reliever Shawn Schmitt. Brian Kuhbander
hit a solo homerun and John Long doubled in Brandon Howard,
who had walked earlier in the inning. With the score
standing at 4-3 in the favor of the Redlegs, the first of
two rain delays brought the game to a halt for 20 minutes.
Redlegs skipper Jacob Robinson decided to send Guntle back
to the mound despite the delay, and the Rangers greeted him
with back-to-back-to-back homeruns off the bats of Clint
Wolf, Robert Riley, and Joe Staten. Brad Clark then
relieved Guntle and got the Redlegs out of the jam, but the
damage had been done and the Rangers re-took the lead 6-5.
However, in the top of the 7th the Redlegs again took the
lead. Brad Clark started the rally with a walk, followed
by a single from Robinson and then an RBI single from
Mattice. Taylor Guntle then reached on an error which
scored Robinson, and John Long later doubled in Guntle to
give the Redlegs the 7-6 lead. The lead would not last long
however, the Rangers quickly took the advantage in the
bottom half of the 7th by scoring twice to take a 8-7 lead.
The Redlegs looked to put the game away by putting up 5 runs
in the top of the 8th, again taking the lead, this time 12-
8. Kevin Campbell led the inning off with a walk, followed
by an RBI double from Jared Bradley and an RBI single from
Brad Clark. Jacob Robinson then hit his 2nd career homerun,
bringing in two more runs. After two strikeouts, Derek
Graham doubled, followed by an RBI double from Brian
Kuhbander to finish off the teams scoring on the day. But
the Rangers would not go out without a fight, in the bottom
of the 8th they scored 3 more runs to make it a one run
game. Robert Riley led the inning off with a single,
followed by Joe Staten's second homerun of the game. Jelani
Arnold then singled in Jonmarc Lippincott, who had doubled
two batters earlier.
After a scoreless top of the 9th the Redlegs went to the
bottom half of the inning leading by one, and Robinson
turned to Brandon Howard to close out the game for the
Redlegs. Howard pitched a perfect 1-2-3 inning to secure
the win and get the Redlegs back to .500 at 9-9.
